Before you throw a punch or slip a jab, you need to master one of the most important skills in boxing: the boxer stance. This is the foundation of your balance, power, and defense — no matter if you're a beginner or a pro.
The boxer stance is your starting position in the ring. It's how you stand to:
Maximize balance
Protect yourself
Move quickly
Deliver powerful punches
There are two main stances:
Orthodox Stance (left hand forward – for right-handed boxers)
Southpaw Stance (right hand forward – for left-handed boxers)
Feet Position:
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.
Step your left foot forward and your right foot back (about 45° angle).
Keep your knees slightly bent.
Your weight should be balanced — not leaning too far forward or backward.
Hands & Guard:
Keep your left hand up, about 6–8 inches in front of your face (your jab hand).
Keep your right hand near your cheek to protect your chin.
Elbows tucked in to protect your body.
Head & Chin:
Keep your chin down (tucked slightly into your chest).
Eyes looking forward — always watch your opponent.
Body Alignment:
Your shoulders should be relaxed, not stiff.
Your right shoulder slightly behind your left (to load your rear hand for power shots).
Stay on the balls of your feet (not flat-footed).
Keep your feet roughly at 11 o’clock and 5 o’clock angles.
When you move: step with your lead foot first and your rear foot follows — always keep your stance intact.
If you’re naturally left-handed, use the Southpaw Stance:
Right foot forward
Right hand jabs
Left hand stays back for power shots
Some advanced fighters learn to switch stances mid-fight for tactical advantage.
Standing too tall (easy to knock off balance)
Feet too close or too far apart
Dropping your hands (open to punches)
Leaning forward (makes you predictable)
"Your stance is your home. If you lose it, you lose your defense and your power."
A solid boxing stance is where great technique begins. Whether you’re training for fitness or competition, mastering your stance gives you better balance, sharper punches, and smarter defense.
